Endometrial hyperplasia is the name for overgrowth of the lining of the uterus, generally due to an excess of estrogen in the body over time. This condition can be the culprit in a number of menstrual and reproductive symptoms, including infertility. In most cases, the hormone estrogen regulates the growth of the uterine lining, or endometrium, causing it to grow and thicken in preparation for potential pregnancy. Sometimes, however, the body produces an excess of estrogen or women take estrogen as a hormonal supplement, and this causes the endometrium to grow too much, filling the uterine cavity and leading to menstrual and reproductive difficulties.
